LAWRENCEVILLE: Ga. Gwinnett College hires first baseball coach

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Georgia's newest four-year public college in more than a century has hired its first baseball coach.

Brad Stromdahl has been named head coach for Georgia Gwinnett College. Stromdahl comes to the suburban Atlanta college from Georgia State University, where he was the assistant coach to Greg Frady.

Stromdahl is a former catcher who played professionally for independent baseball leagues. He's also coached at Southwest Minnesota State, Marshall University in West Virginia and Central Michigan University.

He is the first in planned coaching hires as Georgia Gwinnett builds its Grizzlies intercollegiate athletics program from scratch.

The college has applied to become a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and plans men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, softball and baseball.

The college opened five years ago.

LOCAL PROFILE: NFL Linebacker Rennie Curran

LILBURN -- Former Brookwood High School football standout, Rennie Curran is patiently waiting for a new jersey. Over the past two years, Curran went from the University of Georgia to LP Field in Nashville and now he's back at home.

Curran was released shortly after this year's NFL pre-season, despite leading the team in tackles during the pre-season.

Since being cut, Curran has been training at Catalyst and other gyms to ensure that when he does get a call, he wont miss a step. Curran is pretty confident he'll be wearing someone's jersey soon.

Subway celebrates 500th Metro Atlanta store

ATLANTA -- With the arrival of several new stores this month, Subway celebrates the opening of more than 500 stores in Metro Atlanta since its first location in 1977.

This milestone is a testament to the Subway brand and the franchisees who have made it so successful in the Atlanta area -- not to mention the world, as Subway is the planet's largest restaurant chain with over 34,000 locations.

"We continue to offer a dining experience that meets the changing tastes and needs of our loyal patrons, so it is no surprise to see this important achievement," said Christi Estis, director of operations for Subway Development of Atlanta. "We could not have reached this milestone without the dedication of our model franchisees and employees.

BEST SPOTS: The Atlanta Braves #BravesBash

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves held their first #BravesBash social media event on Sunday evening after a matchup against the Chicago Cubs.

Although Dan Uggla broke his 33-game streak an hour before, he and all of his teammates put their smiles on and were perfectly poised to chat with fans from across the United States.

The Braves steamed a behind-the-scenes look at their first effort on their website. The event had multiple stations for fan interaction: they hosted a Conference Call, Skype with Fans, they moderated a Twitter conversation, streamed Peter Moylan’s talkshow which was named by his Twitter followers and hosted simultaneous online chats.

As a result of the effort, the team gained about 3,000 Twitter followers and acquired 16,500 Facebook likes.
