DORAVILLE, Ga. -- The Atlanta Silverbacks have signed 24-year-old Borfor Carr as the newest member of the team, the club announced Friday.

Carr offiically joins the Silverbacks after an impressive extended trial during preseason training camp.

LAWRENCEVILLE | Grayson's Robert Nkemdiche heads all-state team

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Grayson defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche, a junior who is regarded as one of the nation's top college prospects for 2013, is the Georgia Sports Writers Association's All-Classification Player of the Year.

Nkemdiche helped lead Grayson to its first Class AAAAA state championship.

He emerged as one of the state's top players last year, leading Grayson to the state semifinals. He continued that success with 18 sacks and 17 quarterback pressures this season while playing defensive end and nose guard.

Nkemdiche also made an impact at running back, where he was almost impossible to stop on short-yardage plays. He rushed for 528 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Falcons honor high school coaches at weekend luncheon

Falcons honor high school coaches at weekend luncheon

 

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Falcons hosted their Fourth Annual Salute to High School Football Luncheon on Saturday, December 10. Local coaches like Jess Simpson from Buford High School, Gary Varner from Allatoona High School, and Michael Carson from MLK Jr. High School were honored according to their classification.

The luncheon, held at the Georgia World Congress Center, was sponsored by the AirTran Airways, hhgreggm and Russell Athletic, among others. Former Falcon, Alge Crumpler served as keynote speaker for the event.  

Also, honored at the event was Dave Hunter, a legendary coach at Brookwood High School; Hunter was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Also honored at the ceremony was Cameron Sutton of Jonesboro High School,  he was awarded with the Warrick Dunn Captain in the Community of the Year Award.

The Falcons will host a football clinic for high school coaches, next spring.

Georgia Gwinnett College hires women's soccer coach

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- A veteran soccer coach has been chosen to lead the new women's soccer program at Georgia Gwinnett College.

Domenic Martelli comes to Gwinnett with 18 years of Division I coaching experience. He spent the last 12 seasons at Georgia State University, where he quickly became the winningest coach in school history.

"It's thrilling to be a part of what is beginning to take place at GGC," Martelli said. "This is a golden opportunity -- a college growing academically, technologically and, of course, athletically."
