Neighbors pull baby from car after deadly crash

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- One person is dead and others – including a baby – seriously injured after an accident in Gwinnett County late Wednesday night.Officials said the accident happened just before 10 p.m. near the intersection of McKendree Church Road and McKendree Park Lane in Lawrenceville.

Officials said the driver of a 2002 Honda Accord, 26-year-old Michael Schick, failed to maintain lane after skidding across the roadway and crossing into the southbound lane.

It struck a Toyota Camry driven by 26-year-old Shana Fischer-Williams almost head-on killing her passenger and seriously injuring 1-year-old Cameron Lowe.

All surviving parties were taken to a nearby hospital.

"There were probably 10 to 15 people out here to help and do whatever we could," neighbor Tee Harrison told 11Alive's Jennifer Leslie.

Harrison said they discovered Lowe in his car seat trapped in the back of Camry.

"The car seat was in an awkward position. The baby was literally hanging upside down," Harrison explained. "We finally broke one of the windows and were able to get one of the car doors open. I cut the car seat straps, and we were able to bring the baby out."

Harrison said Fischer-Williams was conscious but pinned in the driver's seat. The baby's father was unresponsive in the front passenger seat.

Rescue crews pulled the family from the car and rushed them to the hospital.

"To have a baby involved, it tugs at your heart," Harrison added.

Police said speed and alcohol were contributing factors.

Friends have since set up a GoFundMe page to help the Fischer-Williams and Lowe with medical bills, lost wages, funeral expenses, airfare and recovery.
