Snellville Police Facebook message encourages gun owners licensed to carry to do so

ATLANTA, Ga. -- In light of the shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., metro Atlanta is just one of many places where law enforcement officials are encouraging people licensed to carry guns to do so.

Capt. Greg Perry with the Snellville Police posted Thursday a message to the department's Facebook page urging officers and citizens to be prepared for the unexpected.

"The primary purpose for the post was pretty much to draw attention to the security issues that are going on,” Perry said.

He wrote:

“Police officers - please carry your firearm off-duty...we are so fortunate to receive the training to protect others and ourselves. Do not let that training go to waste by leaving your lifesaving tools at home while you are out. All other law abiding, legal gun carry folks - please learn to carry safely, so you can protect yourself and your fellow citizens in the event that a lethal emergency unfolds in front of you."

Perry said the department isn't looking for crime-fighting vigilantes, but does want people to carry safely so they can protect themselves when they need to.
