Petition prompts new graduation dress code

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- Male and female graduating seniors at Brookwood High School in Gwinnett County will now have the same dress code when they march across the stage.

Students had said that girls would be barred from walking if they wore pants instead of a skirt. More than 800 students signed a Change.org petition calling for a gender-neutral dress code.

In order to reduce confusion and make sure everyone is on the same page, Gwinnett County Schools has now issued a new set of guidelines for the graduates.

The new guidelines states that students must dress in professional attire with no distinction between male and female dress.

According to Gwinnett County Schools, that includes dresses, skirts and blouses, dress pants, shirts and ties. Students are not allowed to wear tennis shoes, flip-flops or extremely high heels.

Gwinnett County Schools says the guidelines are more about respecting the graduation ceremony and those being honored.
