MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Lassiter boys soccer team's quest for a state championship was dashed Wednesday by South Gwinnett.
The Comets upset the state's top ranked team 2-1 in the first round of the state high school soccer playoffs.
South Gwinnett got on the board first on a goal by Austin Varney that would prove to be the only score of the first half. In the second half, Tray Luscre scored on a header to tie the match at 1-1.
The number one team in the state appeared to be playing better, but Comets goalkeeper Max Catamaglia was stopping every shot. With the score tied 1-1 and 2 minutes to go, Derek Denton scored on a header to give South Gwinnett the lead for good.
The 2-1 win lifted South Gwinnett to (11-4-1), while Lassiter's season ends at (16-1).
