QualTex labs expands their company in Gwinnett County

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Recently, the QualTex Laboratories, a San Antonio, Texas-based independent blood testing lab, celebrates the grand opening of its expanded operations in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

The company hired more than 100 “highly-trained”, expert clinical laboratory scientists and the likes for their expansion in Norcross.

The company plans to invest about $12 million dollars into this branch of the company over the next five years.

QualTex is the largest independent testing lab in the United States for blood and plasma products, providing infectious disease testing services to blood banks and plasma center customers worldwide.

The QualTex Norcross facility will house a data center and tests more than eight million biological samples, whole blood and plasma, double its operations a year ago.

QualTex is located at 4258 Communications Drive in Norcross.

Inmate dies in holding cell at Gwinnett County Jail

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- (submitted by Gwinnett County Sherriff's Department) A 26-year-old man died Saturday after he became unresponsive in a holding cell at the Gwinnett County Jail.

Quincy William Franklin was brought in to the Gwinnett Jail shortly after midnight Saturday by Lawrenceville Police on a probation violation. He had been picked up by police in DeKalb County Friday night.

Mr. Franklin was placed in a holding cell with two other inmates in admissions. At 12:37 p.m., Mr. Franklin was still snoring loudly in a holding cell with two other inmates. At 12:52 p.m., deputies came to remove one of those inmates to be processed and Mr. Franklin could not be awakened and was not responsive. Medical personnel in the jail responded. Mr. Franklin was given CPR and an ambulance transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed Monday, but the results of that autopsy are pending toxicology results.

BUFORD -- Join Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation and the creator of the Yoga in Daily Life, H.H. Paramhans Swami Maheshvarananda, for an inspiring workshop and lecture series which will be held on March 5th-7th entitled, Yoga: Harmony for Body, Mind and Soul.

This program is open to pupils aged 13-up and pre-registration required for all events.

This event is $85 per person for the two day workshop and it includes lunches and lecture. The event will be held at the Bogan Park Community Recreation Center located at 2723 North Bogan Road in Buford.

Kaiser Permanente of Georgia Open Snellville Office

On Wednesday, December 1st, Kaiser Permanente of Georgia will celebrate the grand opening of its Snellville Medical Office, the organization’s fourth location in Gwinnett County. The addition of the new 7,500 square foot facility at 2240 Fountain Drive is part of Kaiser Permanente of Georgia’s ongoing initiative to make access to health care more convenient for its 230,000 members across metro Atlanta.

Kaiser Permanente of Georgia invested more than $2 million in interior construction, furniture, and medical and IT equipment for the Snellville Medical Office to create a unique total health environment that nurtures the mind, body and spirit in sickness and in health.


Staffed by physicians of The Southeast Permanente Medical Group, the Snellville Medical Office offers internal medicine, pediatrics, Ob/Gyn, radiology and lab services, as well as an on-site pharmacy. Physicians on staff include Purnima Rao, M.D. (internal medicine), Shekou Sesay, M.D.

Empire Beauty Schools Honor Breast Cancer Survivors

Although October has passed, Empire Beauty Schools are working to do their part to commemorate breast cancer survivors. On Tuesday, December 7th from 9:00 until 4:00 p.m. at different Empire Beauty School locations around Atlanta cancer survivors are invited to campus for a day of complimentary pampering as a part of the school’s participation in Cancer Survivor Beauty & Support Day (CSBSD).  

Men, women and children of any age will be treated to free hair and nail services on a day that is intended to make all cancer survivors feel supported and appreciated, and to get a much-needed break from their daily worries.

CSBSD has been recognized and acknowledged by several state and local governments, received an honorary proclamation in the House of Representatives and is supported by volunteers who work for hospitals, cancer clinics and cancer care organizations.

5K Road Race at Tribble Mill Park, November 13th

The Gwinnett Parks Foundation dare you to “get physical” along with other participants during their 5K Road Race which takes place on Saturday, November 13th at Tribble Mill Park.

The race features a beautiful 5K course on the trail at the park as well as a special Canine and Carriage for those wanting to run with their dogs or strollers. All registered runners will receive a race t-shirt. Medals will be given to all participants who finish and awards will be presented to Overall Male and Female, Master Male and Female and 3-deep in five-year age categories.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Gwinnett Parks Foundation, a nonprofit group of volunteers interested in supporting and expanding the county’s Parks and green space programs through hands-on activities and education.
