Gwinnett dentist to host free dental day

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A Gwinnett County dental practice will offer free services to the community this weekend.

Center for Cosmetic and Sedation Dentistry in Lawrenceville will hold its 8th annual Community of Smiles event on Saturday, Sept. 6, beginning at 6 a.m. The first 225 people in line will have their choice of one free cleaning, filling or extraction.

Community of Smiles has helped more than 1,100 people and given away nearly $270,000 worth of services so far, according to Center for Cosmetic and Sedation Dentistry financial coordinator Rachel Smallwood.

Patients must be at least 14 years old and will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- J. G. Dyer Elementary School will hold a 5K fundraiser this weekend to benefit its PTA.

The Cub Caper 5K Run/Walk will be Saturday, Sept. 6 at Mountain View High School. On-site registration begins at 6:30 a.m., and the race will start at 8 a.m.

Runners will receive T-shirts, while the top male and female finishers, masters finishers and age group runners will earn special prizes.

Advance registration is $20 and closes at noon on Friday, Sept. 5. Those who don't wish to participate can still support the Dyer PTA by becoming phantom runners, also for $20.

Gwinnett County Police Department to hold job fair

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- The Gwinnett County Police Department will hire new officers during a job fair this weekend.

The department said it is looking for professional candidates who are interested in improving the quality of life in Gwinnett, and serving and protecting the county's 800,000 residents.

Gwinnett officers earn competitive salaries, tuition reimbursements, health and 401(k) benefits, and access to take-home cars.

The job fair will be Saturday, Aug. 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the county's Police Training Center, which is located at 854 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.

ALDI hiring associates, shift managers

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- ALDI will hold a hiring fair this week for several of its metro Atlanta locations.

The discount grocery chain needs associates and shift managers for stores in Decatur, Lawrenceville and Snellville.

The jobs event will be Friday, Aug 1 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will be held at the ALDI at 3340 Centerville Highway in Snellville.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. They must also agree to undergo a background check and drug test.

ALDI store associates earn an average of $10.50 an hour, while shift managers earn $14.50 an hour. Workers who put in at least 20 hours a week receive 401(k) benefits, and health and dental insurance.

Gwinnett County Public Library is proud to announce New York Times bestselling author Luis Carlos Montalván, a 17-year veteran and former U.S. Army captain, as the featured author for the 2014 One Book, One Community countywide reading program.
 
Montalván will be joined by his beloved service dog, Tuesday, for events on September 20 and 21.
 
Montalván and Tuesday will kick off the 2014 Suwanee Fest on Saturday, September 20 at 9 am as grand marshals for the Suwanee Fest Parade.
 
At 11:30 am on the Town Center Stage, Montalván will read from his children’s book, “Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond between a Soldier and his Service Dog,” which details a day in the life of this service dog extraordinaire as narrated by Tuesday.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Aurora Theatre is set to continue its highly successful Aurora Comedy Nights on Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19.

Comedy enthusiasts are invited to spend an evening (or two) laughing and enjoying the reality-based humor of headliner Big Kenney, featuring the unique laughs of Mo Arora and Atlanta’s Top Comic semi-finalist Kelly Spillman. Katie Causey returns as host for this exciting two-night event that can’t be missed.

Shows will be at 7:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. Tickets may be purchased for $18 per person or with a Comedy Tix Pass at the box office, open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

The Aurora Theatre is located at 128 East Pike Street in downtown Lawrenceville. Free parking is available in the city parking deck at 153 Crogan Street.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Archer High School's upcoming 5K will benefit some runners within the school community.

The sixth annual Archer Tigers 5K and Fun Run will be Saturday, May 17 at Tribble Mill Park. A 1-mile fun run will start at 8 a.m. and will be followed by the 5K at 8:30 a.m.

Registration is $25 and includes a T-shirt. Families of four can sign up for a discounted rate of $70. Proceeds will benefit Archer High's cross country teams.

The top male and female finishers, top male and female masters finishers, and top three finishers in each age group will receive special awards.
