Man arrested for shooting arrows at cops

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A Gwinnett County man has been arrested for attacking his wife with a hatchet and then firing arrows at responding officers.

The incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday at a house on Laurel Tree Court in unincorporated Snellville.

Police responded to the house after a woman called 911 and said her husband, 28-year-old Thomas Burt, hit her in the hand with a hatchet and threatened to shoot her with his bow and arrows.

Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith said police arrived and tried to convince Burt to leave the house. He refused and then threatened the officers.

Shortly after midnight, Burt fired an arrow through the front door of his home, according to Smith. The arrow grazed one officer's face.

Burt fired a second arrow about 10 minutes later, striking a patrol car.

Smith said a negotiator eventually persuaded Burt to come out of the house. The suspect was arrested and charged with four counts of aggravated assault. He is being held without bond in the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

Burt's wife was treated by EMS personnel for a non-life-threatening injury to her hand. The officer who was grazed by the arrow did not require medical treatment. Smith said police found that arrow sticking out of a neighbor's garage door.

Thursday's arrest was Burt's second run-in with police in less than a year. In April 2013, he was charged with using a pepper ball gun to shoot and pistol-whip a man who cut him off in traffic.
