Gwinnett Medical Center names new Heart & Vascular Center

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The new Heart & Vascular Center at Gwinnett Medical Center will be named the Strickland Heart Center, the hospital announced Thursday.

The naming is in honor of Clyde and Sandra Strickland, who donated $3.2 million to the medical center -- its largest-ever total gift.

"The significant generosity of the Stricklands helped us realize the vision of advanced and comprehensive cardiovascular services in the Gwinnett community at an accelerated pace," said Phil Wolfe, president and CEO of Gwinnett Medical Center. "Without their gift, it would have taken much longer to pay for the new Heart & Vascular Center."

Several of the Stricklands' friends and family have suffered heart problems, and many had to be treated in Atlanta because of a lack of comprehensive cardiac services in the northern suburbs, which is why they felt so passionate about the Heart & Vascular Center, according to the hospital.

In addition to the name, the hospital released its fundraising progress on Thursday. Thanks to the generosity of 3,750 donors, the campaign has raised $9.1 million, exceeding its goal of $8 million.

"We built this facility because the community realized the importance of cardiac services in Gwinnett," said Dr. Manfred Sandler, the hospital's medical director of cardiology. "Many community members were inspired by people like the Stricklands, who jumpstarted our campaign with an initial $1 million donation, and we are so grateful for that geneorosity."

The Strickland Heart Center is located in Lawrenceville and features advanced technology, including state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs and operating rooms. The hospital's open heart surgery program will launch in January.
